- My great-grandfather created the unique flavor of Barq's (pronounced
BARKS) back in 1898. It's his secret formula that gives Barq's its famous
"bite." Barq's is special to me, and I'd like to know what
you think.

Spike says:
- Starts off good with a nice head...unfortunately
it dies rather quickly. Doesn't anyone else understand the joys of a
root beer foam mustache other than me? So anyway, nice color - just
a shade darker than medium. Not too much carbonation, so that
famous Barq's "bite" must come from the spices...a nice change
from the burn-your-tongue burp-all-night over-carbonated brands. Still,
it's not too harsh. Smooth, yet zippy. Speaking of zippy, this is one
of the very few root beers to add caffeine, though only about half the
amount found in Coke. (could this be the source of the bite? see below)
Do you think they added caffeine back in 1898? Nah...back then it was
probably cocaine. It's just as well they don't use cocaine today - I
wouldn't be able to afford a single can! Maybe my tastebuds are on the
fritz but I can't really identify the spices. I can say this: Barq's
is definitely spicier than the other mass-market brews. Good choice
out of a vending machine: B-
- Spike also says:
- Barq's is owned by Coca-Cola (gee...canned in Atlanta...CCE Bottling
Group? What company has the initials 'CC' and is found in Atlanta?).
According to Coke, Barq's is the number one selling root beer in the
U.S. (though other
sources say Barq's isn't root beer at all). Also according to Coke,
"The caffeine that is added to Coca-Cola classic, diet Coke and
the other products in which it is used is for flavor purposes only."
